HISTORy

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Washington District 1 has a rich history dating back over seven decades. Founded On July 2, 1949, it has played a significant role in supporting and advocating for veterans in the state of Washington.

The department’s inception can be traced back to the aftermath of World War I when a group of veterans recognized the need for a collective voice to address the challenges faced by returning servicemen. They sought to provide a supportive network, fight for veterans’ rights, and honor the sacrifices made by those who served their country.

Over the years, the VFW Department of Washington District 1 has grown in size and influence. It has consistently worked towards ensuring that veterans receive the benefits and services they deserve, advocating for improved healthcare, education, and job opportunities. The district has been actively involved in legislative initiatives and has collaborated with various government agencies and community organizations to achieve its goals.

In addition to its advocacy efforts, the VFW Department of Washington District 1 has been committed to fostering camaraderie among veterans. DISTRICT OFFICERS

Terry D. Stinson

District 1 Commander

Commander Stinson is a Legacy Life Member of the Ward Roney Jr. VFW Post 7511 in Monroe, WA. He has served as Post Commander for three years where he led his Post to All State and All American distinction each year. Comrade Stinson served as District Senior Vice Commander for one year prior to his election as District 1 Commander. Comrade Stinson is a retired Chief Warrant Officer from the United States Coast Guard.

Carl Kurfess

District 1 Sr. Vice Commander

Comrade Kurfess is the current Post Commander of VFW Post 8870 in Edmonds, WA. This is his second year as Post Commander. Comrade Kurfess is retired U.S. Army and U.S. Army reserve, with 28 years in Infantry and Civil Affairs.

Chris Cote

District 1 Jr. Vice Commander

Comrade Cote is the current Post Commander for VFW Post 921 in Snohomish, WA. This is his second year as Post Commander. Comrade Cote previously served as an All State and All American Post Quartermaster for Post 921. Comrade Cote is a retired U.S. Naval Aviator.

Donald Wischmann

District 1 Quartermaster

Comrade Wischman is currently the Post Quartermaster for Old Guard VFW Post 2100, Everett, WA. Comrade Wischman is also an All American Past District 1 Commander. Comrade Wischman is an integral member of District 1. Comrade Wischman served in the U.S. Navy.

John Beam

District 1 Adjutant

Comrade Beam is a Past Department of Washington Commander as well as a Past District 1 Commander. Comrade Beam has been a member of the VFW for 40+ years. Comrade Beam is currently the Post Quartermaster for VFW Post 1040, Lynnwood, WA. Comrade Beam is retired from the U.S. Navy.

Chief of Staff, Inspector, & Trustee 2

Comrade James is the current Department of Washington Jr. Vice Commander and Pup Tent 8 Seam Squirrel. Comrade James is a two-time National Aid de Camp and was the Seam Squirrel of the Year for the Grand of Washington 2022-2023. Previously, Comrade James was an All American and All State Post Commander for VFW Post 7511 in Monroe, WA.

Judge Advocate

Comrade Gilliland is the current Judge Advocate of VFW Post 8870 in Edmonds, WA. Rose was previously the Post Commander of VFW Post 8870 and District 1 Junior Vice Commander.

Comrade Andrew is the current Post Chaplain for the Ward Roney Jr. VFW Post 7511, Monroe, WA. Comrade Andrew is also the current Military Order of the Cootie, Pup Tent 8, Sky Pilot. Comrade Andrew served in the United States Army.

Officer of the Day

Comrade English is a member of VFW Post 921 and has served in numerous key roles both at the Post and District level. Comrade English is a retired U.S. Navy Veteran.

Dave Ortega

Trustee 1

Comrade Ortega is the current Post Quartermaster for the Ward Roney Jr. VFW Post 7511 in Monroe, WA. This is Comrade Ortega’s fifth year as the Post Quartermaster. Comrade Ortega is a four time All State and All American Post Quartermaster. Comrade Ortega served in the United States Marine Corps.

Comrade Wolfe is a past District 1 Commander and a multi-time All American and All State Post Commander of VFW Post 921 in Snohomish, WA. Comrade Wolfe is retired from the U.S. Navy.
